Exceptional early Inuit stone sculpture by documented Salluit (formerly Sugluk) artist Annie Ikilluaq Saviakjuk (b. 1938), depicting a kneeling woman carrying or holding a child.
The sculpture is carved from a substantial grey stone and stands approximately 7.5 inches high. At approximately 6 lbs. 13 oz., it has considerable weight and presence for its size.
Most importantly, the underside is inscribed E9-1197, the documented Canadian Inuit disc number assigned to Annie Ikilluaq Saviakjuk. Additional carved markings/syllabics are present on the base.
Saviakjuk is a documented sculptor from Salluit/Sugluk, Nunavik. Her work has appeared at major sale houses and in specialist Inuit art galleries and collections.
The sculpture is particularly appealing for its intimate mother-and-child subject and restrained, highly sculptural treatment. The woman's broad amauti forms much of the mass of the composition, while the child projects outward from her arms. Visible hand-tooling throughout the stone contributes to the character of the work.
