Hotel Dyckman - Minneapolis - 1909 Era - Rare Hotel Silver Teapot

Offered for your consideration is an extremely rare 1909-1910 era bottom marked silver plate 10 oz. teapot made for the once famous Hotel Dyckman that was located in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The teapot stands 4.5 inches tall just over 7 inches from end of handle to end of spout. An amazing addition to your historic Minneapolis collection, historic hotel silver, tea pot, or restaurant ware collection.

Any actual silver plate; especially, holloware, is seldom seen from the Dyckman. But an actual hotel silver teapot (which is the first I've had in the past 30 years) is extremely rare. If you collect vintage hotel silver, quality historic items from Minneapolis, or hotel - restaurant ware items, you might want to consider this rarity for your collection.

Historically, construction on the famousDyckman started in 1909 with it officially opening on May 3rd, 1910. The hotel was built and owned by wealthy New York businessman magnet, John Andrus, who named the hotel after this wife's maiden last name; Dyckman. It was his intention to open one of the most opulent and upscale hotels in the downtown area of the city. However, he would not actually operate the hotel; rather, he would lease it out. At a towering 10-stories high, the 340 room hotel was designed by the architectural firm of Long Lamoreaux & Long, and was located on 6th Street between Hennepin and Nicollet streets. Lavish was the style of the hotel; especially, when Chicago artist, Edward Holsag, was commissioned for a large mural titled the "Roman Triumphal Procession" that was in the lobby to accompany the Italianate marble and gilded ceilings.

In 1914, the hotel's president was H.J. Tremain (and lease operator) and the general manager was William H. Jones. The hotel also offered, in addition to its fine dining rooms, two upscale cafes that offered wonderful cuisine for the "noon lunches". The hotel was also in close walking distance from many of the downtown shops, stores, and retail establishments. In 1917, the hotel offered two new upscale restaurants called "The Elizabethan Room" and the "New Hawaiian Room". Rooms for the night ranged from $1.50 all the way to $5.00.

Throughout the Roaring Twenties and with Prohibition in effect, it was said the hotel received its supply of liquor via way of a secret tunnel that had been covertly constructed under 6th Street. By the 1930's, Andrus had sold his hotel to the American Hotels Co., which operated hotels across the United States. Though, they continued the hotel's opulence and appeal where it continued to be one of leading hotels in the city. Throughout the remainder of the hotel's history, it changed ownership other times until it was closed and shuttered in the 1970's. Sadly, the grand hotel fell in 1979 and the site eventually became the City Center. But when this teapot was made and used, the Dyckman was one of the most famous and luxurious hotels in Minneapolis.

It would've been used in one of the hotel's restaurant, dining rooms, banquet hall, cafe's, or even for room service, in service with, the Dyckman Hotel china and glassware. It is the heavyweight type steamship, restaurant, and railroad silver plate. It was made by the R. Wallace Silver Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut. It is silver soldered, marked 10 oz., has the catalog number of 0333, and is marked in italicized letters on the bottom "HOTEL DYCKMAN". As to be expected of actual hotel silver used in a hotel over 100 years ago, it has silver plate wear, the usual light usage scratches, some dings, dents, pitting, etc. The inside does have wear and associated pitting and silver plate loss. The lid functions well, the base sets evenly on a flat surface, and the handle is firmly attached.
