This is an original Hotel Van Rensselaer room key No. 510 from Greenwich Village, Manhattan.
* Date: Probably 1950s–early 1960s. “New York 3, N.Y.” is the pre-ZIP postal-zone format generally used before 1963.
* Material: Brass key with red molded plastic hotel fob.
* Purpose of wording: Anyone finding it could drop it into a mailbox; the hotel guaranteed the return postage.
* Hotel history: The Van Rensselaer occupied 13–19 East 11th Street and operated until its conversion into apartments around 1972–73. Hotel history
* Interesting connection: Frank Zappa and his wife Gail reportedly stayed there when they moved to New York in 1967, although there is no evidence connecting them specifically to room 510. Zappa recollection
