Historical Subject:
The central artwork depicts a famous event in Sri Lankan Buddhist history: the bringing of the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree sapling from India to Ceylon (Sri Lanka) by the nun Sanghamitta, welcomed by King Devanampiyatissa.
Inscription:
A stylized English text is artistically integrated along the inner borders, reading: "Sacred Sri Maha Bodhi From India To Ceylon By Nun Sangamitta Was Welcomed / Bringing Of The Sapling Of / By King Devanampiyatissa."
