About the Artist: Born in Philadelphia, James Reid completed a four-year course at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, where he studied illustration under Thornton Oakley, a disciple of the Brandywine School made famous by N. C. Wyeth. In 1930, Reid created seventy-eight stunning wood engravings for The Life of Christ in woodcuts, wherehe depicted the most important events in the life of Christ using a series of highly-stylized woodcut prints in the Art Deco Style. This event was important as itintroduced the idea of the graphic novel in the early 20th century.
