Based solely on the original holders retelling, (and stamping, obviously) this is a 1970’s, Johnson’s Handmade Naturals Bent Billiard -The Birdseye is fairly even on both cheeks of the stummel split with crossgrain down the face and heal. The rim is ever so slightly concave, and does show its use over time with some darkening - just a hint of a few tamps on the front edge. I’ve left this pipe in its original condition, preserving the shape and dimensions intended for this treasured pipe. there is one surface cigarette burn/dark spot on the face. It does not show as char, only a darkening, Should the next holder wish buff out.
Richard C. Johnson wasa regarded American pipemaker who began his career in 1939 carving for the Weber Pipe Co. before opening his own shop inCarlisle, Pennsylvaniasometime in the1960s. Johnson to have mentored legendary carvers; notablyJ.M. Boswell, who apprenticed under Johnson in the late 1970’s, carving hundreds of pipes bearing the Johnson’s stamp.
I’ve cleaned the shank & stem airways with 99% alcohol and have reamed the chamber. I did not observe any cracks or burnout.
