James Naismith Physical Education Journal Lot 1892-1895 Early Basketball Ads:
$1495.00

Complete 4-Issue Archive of Historic "Physical Education" Monthly Journals (1892–1895) – Featuring Basketball Inventor James Naismith as Editor & The Earliest Commercial Basketball Advertisements.
Description: Spectacularly rare, high grade lot of four (4) original issues of the "Physical Education" monthly journal, published by the Triangle Publishing Company in Springfield, Massachusetts between 1892 and 1895.
This lot represents a holy grail for sports historians and advanced ephemera collectors. These journals document the exact window when basketball transitioned from a local YMCA experiment into a nationwide commercial industry. James Naismith (the inventor of basketball) and Luther Gulick are prominently credited on the masthead as the primary active editors for the 1892 and 1893 issues.
Crucial Historical Highlights Included in This Lot:
The Dawn of Basketball Manufacturing: Features incredibly scarce commercial advertisements from the Narragansett Machine Co. of Providence, RI—the historic first commercial manufacturer of basketball goals (showcasing the transition from peach baskets to iron rims and cord nets).
The First Commercial Rulebook Ad: Includes the landmark half-page advertisement offering "Basket Ball for 1893. Revised Rules and detailed explanations. Price 10 cents."
Naismith's Springfield Era Finale: Includes the June 1895 issue, marking the final weeks of Naismith's formal residency at the International YMCA Training School before his historic departure for Denver.
1. November, 1892 (Vol. 1, No. 9): Features early Narragansett Machine Co. goals marketing and Naismith's editorial credit. Condition: Very Good clean interior. The front cover has become unattached and features a tiny chip at the right edge. Text, layout, and advertisements remain crisp and fully intact.
2. February, 1893 (Vol. 1, No. 12): Features the historic 10-cent "Revised Rules" half-page advertisement and Naismith's editorial credit. Condition: Very Good. There are two very soft, faint vertical creases. Nice antique condition. Covers are tightly attached, the spine is stable, and pages display minimal toning.
3. December, 1894 (Vol. 3, No. 10): Documents the rapid expansion of national basketball regulations. Condition: Very Good. Features a very soft, faint vertical crease from historical storage and a tiny chip to the rear cover (well away from the text block). Pages are clean and sharp.
4. June, 1895 (Vol. 4, No. 4): Marks the final stretch of James Naismith's association with the Springfield faculty and journal. Condition: Very Good. Features a very faint vertical fold line from past handling. Binding is highly secure, edges are crisp, and the interior advertising sections are perfectly preserved.
According to official archives, the monthly circulation for this niche professional journal was limited to only about 1,000 copies per month. Given a 130+ year attrition rate of paper ephemera—including historical paper drives and library discards—the surviving pool of these specific issues is miniscule. Finding a single issue is difficult; finding a four-issue collection tracking the absolute infancy of basketball is an extraordinary opportunity.
