BACKGROUND: Terminal Island was home to a thriving Japanese and Japanese American fishing colony of nearly 3,000 residents. Known as \"Fish Harbor\" or \"Furusato\", the tight-knit village pioneered the Southern California tuna industry. In February 1942, residents became the first Japanese Americans forcibly removed to internment camps, after which the village was destroyed.
