John James Newman Civil War Doctor antique photo confederate Topeka Kansas KS For Sale

Original late-19th-century cabinet photograph of John J. Newman (1826–1895) of Shawnee County, Kansas, photographed by C. J. Snyder, 632 Kansas Avenue, Topeka, whose studio operated at that address circa 1889–1896. Period family annotations on the reverse identify the sitter as John J. Newman, record his death on June 30, 1895, and include information concerning his wife, Cinderella Cathrin Howey Newman (1826–1894), who died February 9, 1894. Genealogical and historical records identify Newman as a native of Breckinridge County, Kentucky. He married Cinderella Howey in Kentucky in 1849, lived in the Falls of Rough/Breckinridge County area during the Civil War era, and came to Kansas with his family in 1879, eventually settling in Shawnee County. He and Cinderella are buried at Lynn Creek Cemetery near Topeka.

Of particular historical interest, the reverse of the photograph contains an old family notation identifying Newman as a “Confederate Doctor.” Research confirms that Newman was living in Kentucky during the Civil War period, making the family identification historically plausible; however, an official Confederate military or medical service record definitively connecting this particular John J. Newman to service as a Confederate surgeon has not yet been located, so the inscription should be regarded as family provenance rather than independently verified military service.
