About the 1st Rhode Island Regiment:The 1st Rhode Island Regiment holds a remarkable place in American history as one of the first African American military units ever raised in the United States. Known as Rhode Island\'s \"Black Regiment\" or \"all-Negro\" regiment, it enlisted both enslaved and free Black men, with the state offering freedom to enslaved soldiers who joined. A Hessian officer who faced them noted: \"One sees no regiment in which there are not Negroes in abundance and among them are able bodied sturdy fellows.\"
From Bunker Hill to Yorktown, the regiment compiled an extraordinary record. They defended Fort Mercer against von Donop\'s Hessian assault, fought at Valley Forge, held the bridge at Assumpink Creek during the second Battle of Trenton, and participated in the siege of Yorktown in 1781 — where men of the 1st Rhode Island were part of the assault force that captured the British redoubts on October 14, virtually deciding the outcome of the siege.
