Kraeuter 1830-8 Side Cutter Lineman’s Pliers Smooth Handle, post-1946 For Sale

Kraeuter & Company was founded by August Kraeuter, a German immigrant who came to America in 1859. By 1904 the company was a respected manufacturer of quality tools, especially pliers. Much of the early 20th century (1930s to 1950s) history of the company has been lost. It is pliers for which Kraeuter is best known, but thepany also manufactured a line of wrenches and “striking tools” such as chisels.This 1831-6 Side cutter Lineman’s Pliers present a bit of a puzzle when trying to determine their manufacturing period. The most useful clues are the smooth handle, typical of the period between mid-1940 and 1950s and the circular marking of “Kraeuter” and the Model number (see images). This was begun in 1946. Additionally, the Pliers have the “plain quality” of Kreauter’s “industrial” tools which were made with less refinement and thus at a lower price commencing in the 1940s.The Pliers are in good physical condition. The fixed pivot will need some lubrication to move more easily. There is noticeable evidence of misuse of the Pliers as a hammer (see images).
