This is large and heavy Inuit Eskimo Native vintage soapstone carving of a frog or frog transforming, Signed Levismith.Levi Alasua Pirti Smith (1927–1986) was a noted Canadian Inuit sculptor from Puvirnituq (Povungnituk) in Northern Quebec known for his hand-carved soapstone and stone sculptures depicting traditional northern life, wildlife, and human figures. Early works feature large, roughly finished sculptures, evolving into realistic, highly polished forms. Pieces are typically etched or signed on the bottom with his name ("Levi Smith").
This beautiful carving was brought back from Canada over 50 years ago by a relative. It measures approximately 6 1/2" tall by 4 1/4" wide and 5 1/2" deep (measured from the bottom of front to top back). On the slope, it is approximately 9" long. It weighs approximately 7 1/2 pounds. will calculate the shipping cost based upon your distance from me. It has been kept in a smoke free home. Note that there a few little nicks in the surface as shown by white spots in the photos. Some of the white spots are light reflections.
