This brick was once part of one of the two
giant smokestacks belonging to the historic
Pioneer Mill Company sugar cane refinery
The Backstory:
When one of the
smokestacks was eventually dismantled,
its firebricks were scattered, recycled, or
left behind around the mini-market mall
area in Lahaina. The second landmark
smokestack was preserved via local
community donations.

The Global Connection: The sugar mill
relied on exceptionally durable, imported
refractory fireclay to line its high-heat
furnaces and boilers. These materials were
sourced directly from the Gartcraig Fire
Clay Works near Glasgow, Scotland
between 1876 and 1927.
