Lemon Jade / Serpentine Sphere – 59 mm / 11 oz
A distinctive polished sphere with a soft mix of pale green, cream, peach and pink that gives the stone an almost watermelon-like palette.
The material was sold in the crystal trade as a jade-type material. Based on its appearance and comparison with similar material, the most defensible identification is Lemon Jade, a trade name commonly used for serpentine or serpentine-rich ornamental stone. This piece is not represented as true jadeite or nephrite jade.
In natural sunlight, several areas show fine crystalline sparkle just beneath the polished surface. The color and internal texture also vary considerably as the sphere is rotated, with stronger green areas, creamy sections and scattered peach-to-pink coloration.
Under 365 nm UV, portions of the sphere show an interesting localized pink and green response. The UV reaction is not uniform over the entire sphere and varies by area, as shown in the photographs.
