Hand signed 4x6 inch photo Squadron Leader John LeslieMunro, known as Les Munro, was a Royal New Zealand Air Force pilot during WorldWar II and the last surviving pilot of the Dambusters Raid of May 1943.

Born on 5 April 1919 near Gisborne, New Zealand, he lived ona remote farm until enlisting in the Royal New Zealand Air Force on 5 July1941.

Initially rejecteddue to unsatisfactory scholastic ability, he studied by correspondence and waseventually accepted into the Empire Air Training Scheme.

He trained in Canada and then in England, joining 97Squadron at Woodhall Spa before being transferred to the newly formed 617Squadron, famously known as the Dambusters, on 25 March 1943.

Munro flew as pilot of the Lancaster bomber W-Willie duringOperation Chastise, the mission to destroy dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley.

His aircraft wasdamaged by flak over the Netherlands, which knocked out all communications,forcing him to turn back to Lincolnshire while still carrying the bomb.

He was awarded theDistinguished Flying Cross on 11 June 1943 and the Distinguished Service Orderon 28 March 1943.

He completed 58operational missions during the war, including participation in OperationTaxable, a deception operation supporting the D-Day landings in Normandy.

After the war, Munro returned to New Zealand, where heworked as a property valuer, farmed in the King Country, and later establishedhis own farm near Te Kūiti.

He served as Mayor ofthe Waitomo District Council from 1978 to 1995 and was recognized for hispublic service with the Companion of the Queen's Service Order in 1991 and theCompanion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1997.

He attended several commemorations of the Dambusters Raid,including the 60th and 65th anniversaries, and served as a technical adviserfor a film remake of The Dam Busters.
