We find these ourselves in the rivers, creeks, andcoastal deposits of North and South Carolina, where millions of years of sharkteeth have been washing out of the banks and riverbeds for as long as peoplehave been looking. Ancientseas of the Carolinas

It\'s hard topicture now, but for long stretches of the last 30-some million years, much ofwhat is today North and South Carolina\'s coastal plain was covered by a warm,shallow sea. Layers of sediment built up on that seafloor over time — theChandler Bridge and Ashley Formations from the Oligocene epoch, the Pungo RiverFormation from the Miocene, and the Yorktown and Waccamaw Formations from thePliocene — and each layer preserved the teeth of the sharks that lived andhunted there. As rivers cut through these old seabeds today, they expose andre-wash those fossils, which is exactly where we find them.
