Likely one of a kind original signed and inscribed photograph of Marshal Joseph Joffre, Commander-in-Chief of the French Army during World War I, personally dedicated to Hon. Edward Douglass White, Chief Justice of the United States.
Dated May 3, 1917, this presentation photo was given during Joffre’s historic goodwill mission to America shortly after the United States entered WWI.
The large-format studio portrait shows Marshal Joffre in full formal dress uniform, complete with ceremonial sword, sash, and medals — including the Grand Cross of the Légion d’Honneur.
Beneath the image is Joffre’s flowing ink inscription in French and English, reading:

Souvenir reconnaissance du maréchal
3 mai 1917”

This is a first-hand artifact of Franco-American diplomacy, linking two of the most prominent public figures of the era:
• Marshal Joffre (1852 – 1931) – Hero of the Battle of the Marne and France’s first Marshal of WWI.

In April 1917, following America’s entry into the Great War, Joffre led the French military mission to Washington, D.C. and New York, meeting President Wilson, military leaders, and U.S. dignitaries to coordinate Allied strategy.
This inscribed photo almost certainly originated from that visit — a diplomatic token of gratitude presented to Chief Justice White in recognition of shared Allied purpose.
