The Pattern 1861 US Army Cap, otherwise known as the \"McDowell Cap\" or \"Forage Cap\" was a popular style borrowed from the French and Austrians. It featured the same high, fold-over crown common to all forage caps of the period, but was outfitted with a narrow crescent shaped brim. The name \"McDowell Cap\" originated with US General Irwin McDowell who helped popularize the style.
When the Civil War began, Confederate forces naturally copied US military styles and the McDowell Style Forage Cap was no exception. Many thousands were produced in a variety of color combinations to outfit Southern soldiers. General TJ \"Stonewall\" Jackson was known to be partial to this style of headgear. He wore a blue one early in his Confederate career, and later a custom piece that was presented to him by his wife as a gift.
