The Roman writer Vegetius, in his work De Re Militari, wrote:

It isn’t designed to bend, but can with abuse, it can easily be straightened with a hammer and a vise, or even a rock and a log.
I’m not a spear thrower by and stretch, but I can throw this around 15 yards and hit a reasonable sized target. It penetrated 1” plywood with ease.
