Some decades ago I was in the Middle East and bought this from a street vendor. He told me it was silver, and I kept it all these years. It's a lovely box, very solid, heavy and well made. Well- with the price of silver now, I had it looked at and the technology today is such that they just touch an instrument to the object and it tells the appraiser what it is made of. This box is copper and zinc- no silver at all.
The coloring is quite nice as it has that warm glow from the copper showing through the shimmering zinc brightness.
It is a lovely box, and since I was already resigned to part with it, I'm now hoping to give it a good home. The craftsmanship on it is very nice, and you can see the traditional Egyptian figures hammered into the metal by hand. This isn't a tourist item, but a real treasure of local workmanship meant for wealthy patrons of the region. It really belongs in a museum, so it would be a great gift.
