  Here\'s a classic character nugget from The Golden State. When nature sculpted this gem, she obviously knew her stuff. My photos aren\'t doctored. This was found by a member of California\'s small-scale mining community. Except for a light cleaning, nugget is as found. It seems to still be caked with caliche (calcium carbonate). I\'m selling it as is for those interested in seeing exactly how many nuggets comes out of the ground. fyi- the weight of the caliche isn\'t that significant. Magnified and viewed through a loupe, natural gold is something to behold. You\'re viewing classic Mother Lode placer gold. GLIMMERS OF HOPE

In the lower 48, when watersheds which drain mining districts carry gold, there’s a good chance they’ve been hammered by the old timers. This is especially true when gravel deposits lie above shallow bedrock i.e. from scarcely a few inches of gravel sitting atop bedrock to perhaps three feet of gravel. When I was still digging for gold, three feet to gold would have been considered relatively-shallow bedrock. Glimmers of hope remain, however, \'cos few old diggings were completely worked out. Take it from me, many came close, but eighteen years of prospecting \'hungry ground\' taught me this much. When clear signs of extensive mining are evident, and the ground was easily worked, some of the old timers were surly making bean money. For what it\'s worth, every claim I found gold on had been mined at least once before. With today\'s gold prices, your chances of making a plundered claim pay are much improved. Of course, substantial gold, enough to add up, still needs to be in the ground. A few colors doesn’t magically transform some property into a gold mine. That\'s a shame \'cos almost everyone wants a little gold mine to call his own. Sometimes, it takes years of prospecting to tell whether or not a claim\'s worth hanging onto. That’s up to the owner/lessee/prospector to figure out. The B.L.M. isn\'t responsible for testing claims. Prudent men and women must satisfy the prudent man test. These minimum legal requirements are spelled out by the 1872 mining law. Many claims don’t meet these requirements, yet Uncle Sam\'s B.L.M. will gladly accept your money in filing fees. As mentioned, many placer gold deposits are minute or almost worked out. Oftimes, they\'re confined to a single draw, wash, creek, ravine, arroyo, narrow pediment, or pocket. These can occur directly beneath isolated quartz outcroppings, tertiary channels, active mines, or abandoned mines. Maybe after the old timers were finished cleaning out a wash, an ounce of gold (or less) is all that remained; yet, if today’s prospector finds it, hey! That\'s a pretty decent score these days, however, not everyone wishes to spend an entire season digging for one solitary ounce; then again, maybe you would. I was that guy who didn\'t mind pitiful production \'cos every little nugget that ventured my was a blast. Based on experience, it\'s fair to say many claims won\'t contain ten ounces of minable gold. If you own mineral rights to a marginal property, and you\'re determined to extract every last speck, I totally get that. On a positive note, recreational miners have just as much fun mining these smaller deposits as serious miner types who demand copious amounts of oro to satisfy their own personal itch.
