  Here's a cool little gold and matrix nugget from The Golden State. When nature sculpted this metallic gem, she created character. My photos aren't doctored. This was found by a member of California's small-scale mining community. Except for a light cleaning, nugget is as found. Magnified and viewed through a loupe, natural gold is something to behold. This one has the added allure of containing quartz. You're viewing classic Mother Lode placer gold. Anyone who doesn't appreciate it's natural-ness simply doesn't understand it's nature.

GLIMMERS OF HOPE

In the lower 48, when watersheds which drain a mining district carries gold, there’s a good chance they’ve been hammered by the old timers. This is especially true when gravel deposits rest atop a shallow bedrock from scarcely a few inches of gravel to perhaps three feet. When I was still digging for gold, three feet down to the gold would have been considered shallow bedrock. Even if they've been hammered in past years, glimmers of hope remain for few of these old diggings were completely worked out. Take it from me, many came close, but eighteen years of prospecting 'hungry ground' taught me this much. When clear signs of extensive mining are evident, and the ground was easy to work, some of the old timers were surly making bean money. For what it's worth, every claim I found gold on had been mined at least once before. With today's gold prices, your chances of making plundered claims pay are much improved. Of course, substantial gold still needs to be in the ground. A few colors doesn’t magically transform properties into a gold mine. That's a shame 'cos almost everyone would like a little gold mine to call his own. Sometimes, it takes years of prospecting to tell whether a claim's worth hanging onto or not. That’s up to the owner/lessee/prospector to figure out. The B.L.M. isn't responsible for testing claims. Prudent men and women must satisfy the prudent man test. Minimum legal requirements are spelled out by the 1872 mining law. Many claims don’t meet these requirements, yet Uncle Sam's B.L.M. will gladly accept your money in filing fees. As mentioned, many placer gold deposits are minute or almost depleted. Oftimes, they're confined to a single draw, wash, creek, ravine, arroyo, narrow pediment, or pocket. These may occur directly beneath isolated quartz outcroppings, tertiary channels, active mines, or abandoned mines. Maybe after the old timers finished cleaning out a wash, an ounce of gold (or less) remained; yet, if a prospector finds it, that's a pretty decent score these days. Not everyone, however, wishes to spend an entire season digging for one measly ounce; then again, maybe you would. I was one of those guys who didn't mind 'cos finding every little nugget was a blast. Based on past experience, it's fair to say many claims won't contain ten ounces of minable gold. If you own mineral rights to a marginal property, and you're determined to extract every last speck, I totally get that. On a positive note, recreational miners have just as much fun mining these smaller deposits as serious miner types who demand copious amounts of oro to satisfy their personal itch.
