THE TICKLER was a newspaper, which George Helmbod (1778-1821) began publishing in Philadelphia on September 16th, 1807. It was edited by “Toby Scratch’em,” likely a pseudonym.
It was one of the earliest true comic newspapers. The newspaper continued its satire for six years with attacks on local and national politicians. It ceased publication on November 10th, 1813. It was one of the longest lasting American comic newspapers in post-Civil War era.
