Original Civil War Newspaper: The Union Advocate (North Anson, Maine) — May 1, 1861

Up for sale or sale is a fascinating, complete 4-page original issue of The Union Advocate, published in North Anson, Maine, on Wednesday, May 1, 1861 (Volume 5, Number 42).

Printed just over two weeks after the fall of Fort Sumter, this historic issue captures the raw tension of a nation fracturing into the American Civil War. It offers an incredible look at how rural New England communities received and processed the outbreak of the war.

Major Historical Content Includes:

* The Seward-Confederate Correspondence: Comprehensive front-page coverage of the failed diplomatic communications between Union Secretary of State William H. Seward and Southern Commissioners (Forsyth, Crawford, and Roman) regarding the legitimacy and peaceful recognition of the Confederate States.

* The War News Dispatches: Columns detailing frantic early wartime logistics, including troop build-ups in Charleston, naval dispatches out of New Orleans, and geopolitical maneuvering in critical border states like Kentucky and Missouri.

* Maine Legislative Action: Detailed coverage regarding the special session of the Maine Legislature called to mobilize local regiments, raise defense funds, and support the Union cause.

* 19th-Century Advertising: Pages 3 and 4 feature an outstanding array of period advertisements for local Maine merchants, including dry goods, woodstoves, patent medicines (Dr. Mott's Chalybeate Pills), and regional legal notices.

An excellent addition for any Civil War collector, genealogy researcher, or enthusiast of Maine history.

[Condition Description]

Condition: Good / Very Good for its age.

This is an authentic, original 1861 newspaper printed on durable rag paper rather than wood pulp, which has allowed it to survive beautifully. Please review the photos carefully to verify the condition:

* Text & Legibility: The main masthead is bold and intact. The text across all four pages is crisp, dark, and completely legible.

* Folds & Creases: Features typical horizontal and vertical storage folds from being kept in a family archive or trunk for over a century.

* Stains & Marks: There is a distinct circular liquid/cup stain over the advertisement columns on Page 3 (does not obscure critical war text). Minor generalized age-toning/foxing throughout.

* Edges: Margins show light edge fraying, minor chipping, and tiny edge tears typical of antique newsprint, but the main text block is entirely uncompromised. No major missing pieces.
