From the book: In the territories of Bohemia and Moravia, in the course of the last thousand years, over 600 Jewish religious communities and prayer societies came into being. As a consequence of dramatic historical events, however, many of them ceased to exist - some as early as the Middle Ages, others as late as the turn of the century, when a mass exodus of inhabitants took place from small rural communities to larger towns and emerging industrial centers. For the majority of historical Jewish Communities, however, the ultimate doom was spelled by the Holocaust, during which Czech and Moravian Jews were deported by the Nazis to concentration and extermination camps, where close to ninety percent of of them perished. The only relics of these once important Jewish communities, which can still be found in many small towns and villages in Bohemia and Moravia, are dilapidated remnants of former ghettos, neglected synagogues and weed-ridden cemeteries. Today, there are only five Jewish religious communities in Bohemia and Moravia - in Prague, Pilsen, Usti nad Labem, Brno, and Ostrava, and an additional four active religious societies in Karlovy Vary, Teplice, Liberec, and Olomouc. But 334 Jewish cemeteries and some 20 Jewish departments in municipal cemeteries mostly founded in the 20th century still exist.
