Beautiful vintage original earth pigment painting by the celebrated Native American artist Pablita Velarde (1918-2006). Pablita was a pioneering painter from the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. She famously used "earth painting" techniques, grinding natural minerals, rocks, and colored soils into a fine powder and mixing them with water and a glue medium to paint on board.
This painting depicts a traditional Navajo (Dine) Yei (holy person or spirit) figure (titled "Warrior Yei" on the back of frame) surrounded by stylized corn or sacred plants rendered in her characteristic earth tone palette. Nicely framed it measures 13-1/4" in length and 15-1/4" in height with a sight view of 9-1/4" x 11-1/4".
Included with the painting is a 1985 newspaper article on the artist which is very informative.
Both the painting and wood frame are in good condition. Please note though that there are what appear to be 3 thin scratch marks along the top edge of the painting. They are only noticeable on close inspection.
Please see photos for details.
