Our Baltimore & Ohio Railroad individual coffee pot is just right for a serving of hot beverage! It holds about 12 ounces, and is absolutely adorable in PRISTINE condition .
Made by Shenango China, it appears to be unused.
This piece dates from between 1949 until several years after the B&O discontinued passenger service.** The pattern name is "Centenary" (a/k/a "Colonial") a design first purchased by the B&O for use in the massive 1927 celebration it was planning for its 100th anniversary. The eye-catching shades of blue on white base ware are reminiscent of "flow blue."
Centennial pieces are decorated with a vast array of scenes illustrating important historical B&O events. This coffee pot has two: The Horse Drawn Car 1830 depicts the era of the B&O's original efforts at public transportation; and the Philip E Thomas 1838 portrays one of their very earliest steam locomotives. CONDITION: Pristine - I can find no damage of any kind. There are no cracks, chips, flakes or repairs. The glaze is strong with no blurs or runs. If there are any surface marks from use, I have not been able to find them. Even the spout and inside rims are perfect with no chipping, and both pot and lid are exceptionally bright and clean inside. ** IMPORTANT: We cannot be more specific about exactly when this pot was made. The bottom marking is correct, showing it as having been made by Shenango China, which got the contract in 1949to make this dinnerware for use board B&O dining cars. From then through 1971, when the the B&O finally discontinued passenger service, Shenango continued to produce Centenary pieces for the railroad. Following the end of onboard dining, the B&O sent all its remaining china to the B&O Museum Gift Shop in Baltimore, Maryland to sell there. The beautiful dishes were so popular with museum visitors that museum staff placed several more orders from Shenango strictly for gift shop sale, but (unfortunately for collectors) those pieces carried the exact same marking as the real, passenger-train-used dishes did -- the 1827-1927 Shenango mark, all in blue . Therefore, there is no way to tell if any individual piece was actually used aboard a train or was made later for gift shop sale. However, despite their lesser value to collectors (who prefer the oldest and more unusual pieces) these mid-century dishes filled an important era in the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad's history and are fine collectibles.PLEASE NOTE CHOICE OF SHIPPING SERVICES !
