Paul Laxalt, the former U.S. Senator from Nevada and a longtime political ally of Ronald Reagan, explored a run for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination in 1987. His presidential effort was particularly short-lived: Laxalt established an exploratory campaign in the spring of 1987 and withdrew in August, before the 1988 primary season began.
