Called Land of the Bright Leaf Pittsylvania County is the largest in Virginia and raises the most tobacco. Its tobacco grown only in the Piedmont ofVirginiaand North Carolina, is known throughout the world for golden color and unsurpassed flavor. It is, appropriately enough, known as Virginia Tobacco. A few of these houses were built before 1767, when Pittsylvania was out from Halifax County, but most were built during the prosperous period following the American Revolution. Plate centerpiece is county’s first Clerk’s Office, built about 1771 at Callands, and encircled by sketches of five 18th century homes.
