1789 Manuscript – French Revolution – King's Notary Document

• Date: April 13, 1789. Written just a few weeks before the opening of the Estates-General and the storming of the Bastille.
• Historical Content: A formal receipt signed before the "Notaire du Roy" (King's Notary) Antoine Félix Baroche in Gaillon. Medard Lemeilleur acknowledges receiving 30 Livres for 3 years of land rent ("rente") from the Le Gendre brothers. A perfect testimony of the socio-economic system of the Ancien Régime right before its collapse.
• Fiscal Stamp: Features a beautiful, crisp tax stamp from the Généralité de Rouen ("G. DE ROUEN") at the top. On the left margin, handwritten tax mention: "Controlé à Gaillon le 14 Avril 1789 - Reçu Sept sols six deniers".
• Location: Gaillon & Sainte-Colombe (Normandy, France).
• Signatures: Signed by the King's Notary "Baroche", and witnesses "Vacheron" and "Delamotte" (notable bourgeois of Gaillon). The seller, being illiterate, made a cross mark ("+").
• Condition: Excellent condition for a 230+ year-old document. Strong rag paper, beautiful cursive script, completely legible. Original folds. See pictures for details.
