This is a one-of-a-kind opportunityto own a SUNDAY issue of the The Daily Typhoon, a newspaper published (more or less) daily on the PCE 886, USS Banning. Laid down on March 29, 1944 at Portland, Oregon, she was launched on July 10, 1944 and commissioned on May 31, 1945. Completed just 13 weeks before the Japanese capitulation, the Banning saw duty as a weather station ship in the Philippines. After WWII ended, she continued to serve in the Philippines until she was transferred to Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii, in 1947.
The Daily Typhoon contained news from home, around the world, and from the ship itself. Topics in the Daily Typhoon tend to range from anti-labor legislation in congress to \"where did our clothing go?\" about the laundry services on the ship. This newsletter was the entertainment of the approximately 100 officers and enlisted menwho lived in the ship for months at a time.
Issue is are multi-paged, mimeographed onto legal paper sized sheets. This particular copy is from December 16, 1945. It contains a report on the health of Gen. George S. Patton, who had been in an automobile accident one week prior. He was reported to be \"alert and cheerful\" but with little improvement in sensation. Patton died five days after this issue came out.
