Here is a RARE and ONE-OF-A-KIND Perpetual Trophy from the Miami Valley Motorcycle Club SAP Run, Dayton, Ohio. I purchased this trophy from the estate of one of the winners, Jim Bennett, who I knew. His daughter is my sister\'s best friend, they graduated together.
The Miami Valley Motorcycle Club (known today as the Dayton Motorcycle Club or DMC, founded in the early 1900\'s) is one of the oldest active motorcycle clubs in the United States. They are famous for hosting historic endurance runs, reliability trials and the legendary Devil\'s Staircase Pro Hillclimb in Oregonia, Ohio.
This barrel served as a unique traveling trophy passed from winner to winner each year.
The wood barrel shaped trophy measures 11\" tall and approximately 7 1/2\" in diameter. At the top is a brass plate that says \"WINNERS TROPHY, Annual Spring SAP Run, Miami Valley Motorcycle Club, Dayton, Ohio. There are 7 winners names carved on this trophy (all original signatures carved by the winners) starting in 1944 through 1953. Here is the list of winners on this trophy and a little about them:
1944 winner, Harold Hagan, Dayton, Ohio. I could not find any information on Harold.
1945 and 1946 winner, Orville Cassady, Dayton, Ohio. Orville was a notable Ohio Motorcycle pioneer. He worked as a mechanic for the legendary A.D. Farrow Harley-Davidson dealership before opening his own shop, Cassady\'s Motors, on West Broad Street in Columbus.
1947 winner, Chuck Lasure (not sure if that is the correct spelling of his last name), Columbus, Ohio. Could not find any information about Chuck.
1948 winner, Fritz Howard, Athens, Ohio. Howard is documented in mid-century AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) records as a skilled competitive trail and enduro rider out of Athen, Ohio, who frequently swept regional trials.
1949 winner, John Russell, Columbus, Ohio. Could not find any information about John.
1950 winner, Carl Bagford, Cederville, Ohio. Could not find any information about Carl.
1951, 1952, and 1953 winner, Jim Bennett, Irwin, Ohio. In the late 1940\'s and early 1950\'s, Jim Bennett was a highly competitive enduro and trials rider who actively rode alongside the other men carved into this barrel. He frequently competed in the Miami Valley Motorcycle Clubs grueling Annual Spring Reliability Runs and regional AMA-sanctioned events. Winning a rugged reliability run three years in a row (1951, 1952, and 1953) during that era was an incredible athletic and mechanical feat. Jim was a recent high school graduate when he won this the first time. The \"Three-Peat\" tradition: in many historic motorcycle clubs, winning a perpetual traveling trophy three years in a row meant the rider sometimes earned the right to keep it permanently. There is some light surface wear to the barrel and the metal plate. Barrel is very solid. You are not going to find another piece like this in this amazing condition.
