As of this posting, DC Studios\' excellent HBO max series Lanterns has just crossed the half-way point as it heads into its sixth episode this weekend. The series has been as full of surprises as it has Green Lantern lore, pulling characters, events, story-arcs and more from the DC comics\' source material. Not everything used has been an exact match, but the key facts have remained mostly unchanged.
While his character has since left the series in an explosive way, ANTAAN, the alien hunter with a prior relationship with Rushville\'s mystery Manhunter, was a huge source of speculation throughout Lantern\'s first half. First met in Lanterns\' second episode, \"Trust Fall\", Antaan\'s name was immediately suggestive the comics\' leading RED LANTERN, ATROCITUS. Even more on the money, the episode revealed Antaan\'s tragic history: the Manhunter hiding in Rushville had been responsible for the complete destruction of his homeworld, leaving him as one of its few survivors, and he\'d come to earth seeking his revenge.
Green Lantern fans learned in the epicGreen Lantern #25 (2008) that Atrocitus, the alien Red Lantern who first appeared in the same issue, was the sole survivor of Space Sector 666, a region of space formerly and totally destroyed by the Manhunters. That event was the source of the rage that fueled his Red Lantern ring, just as Antaan\'s rage fueled his plans for revenge in Lanterns.
Antaan proved not to be the Red Lantern we thought and/or hoped he might be, but it\'s significant that the Manhunter assault on 666 was confirmed as canon to the DC Cinematic Universe through him. Moreover, Antaan was not the only living survivor of the DCU\'s version of that attack, thus the door for Atrocitus to appear in a future season of Lanterns remains open.
Where Green Lantern #25 (2008) just mentions the incident, DC\'s RED LANTERNS #0 (2011) devotes its entire issue to the event. It\'s a legitimate Lanterns key in its own right and an insightful read for fans of the show or the character to learn what really went down in Space Sector 666.
