Rare 1861 Civil War Patriotic Card Columbia Wide Awake At Last Anti-Secession
This specific image was originally printed on Civil War \"Covers\" (envelopes). Since this has been trimmed (the corners are cut) and removed from the original envelope, it is valued as a \"cut-out\" or a trade card rather than a full postal cover.
Made of thin cardstock.
Featuring a stinging political cartoon titled \"Columbia Wide Awake At Last.\" The imagery is rich with Union symbolism from the early 1860s. It depicts Columbia, the female personification of the United States, clutching the Constitution and a shield while she firmly grabs a cowering figure by the collar. This figure—representing the Southern rebellion—is marked with the words \"Secession\" and \"Treason\" down his legs. In the background, other Confederate figures are shown fleeing, dropping their weapons and papers in their haste to escape the literal \"mother of the country.\"

The \"Wide Awake\" phrasing is a direct reference to the Wide Awakes, a prominent youth political organization that campaigned for Abraham Lincoln, known for their torchlight parades and vigilance. This card serves as a powerful artifact of the intense propaganda used to rally Union sentiment during the outbreak of the war.

I suppose it just goes to show that even in the 1860s, if you tried to sneak out of the house with the \"family constitution,\" you were bound to get grounded—or at least held by the scruff of your neck until you promised to behave.

Whether you are a collector of Civil War ephemera, political cartoons, or Americana, this card is a striking example of how the North visualized the struggle for the soul of the nation.

The item will be shipped securely in a protective plastic and rigid backing to help it arrive in the same condition it left.
