Rare 1930s Madame X “Roll & Pin” Hair Curler / Styling Tool with Original Paper Instructions!
Unusual piece of early beauty and hairdressing equipment dating to the mid-1930s. This is the Madame X “Roll & Pin”, made/distributed by the Madame X Tiara Co., 4328 N. Keeler Ave., Chicago, Illinois.
The tool was designed to create pin curls. Hair was inserted into the slotted end, rolled around the tool, secured with a bobby pin, and the Roll & Pin was then removed, leaving the curl in place. It was used to set pin curls or wet curls as they called them.
The green piece is jade green colored Bakelite. The Bakelite tool measures just over 6 inches long, with the metal portion extending slightly beyond that.
Included is the scarce original illustrated instruction/advertising paper showing exactly how the Roll & Pin was used. The reverse advertises the 1936 edition of “Popular Hair Beauty”, helping date this piece to approximately the mid-1930s.
Condition: Vintage pre-owned condition with normal age and storage wear. The original paper is heavily creased with staining, discoloration and edge wear, but remains quite readable and displays nicely with the tool. Please examine photos carefully for overall condition.
A fascinating and apparently rare piece of early beautician/hairdressing equipment, particularly desirable with its original illustrated literature still surviving. Great addition to a collection of Bakelite, antique beauty tools, vintage hairdressing equipment, barber/beauty memorabilia, or 1930s advertising.
