Up for consideration is a true survivor of the American Civil War era and a foundational artifact of American photography. This is an authentic, mid-19th-century Imperial-size albumen silver photograph of President Abraham Lincoln.
Based on the historic February 9, 1864, portrait by Anthony Berger at Mathew Brady’s gallery (the iconic image chosen for the U.S. five-dollar bill), this is a continuous-tone photograph from life, not a lithograph, engraving, or modern reproduction.
The 1865 Revenue Stamp
The reverse of the heavy cardstock mount features a an original 2-cent Blue "Proprietary" Civil War Revenue Stamp
The stamp is hand-cancelled in ink with the exact date "7/15/65" This dates the purchase of this luxury photograph precisely three months to the day after Lincoln’s assassination, aligning perfectly with the official, heightened period of national mourning.
The stamp bears the handwritten ink initials "G.W.P.", definitively linking this to the early career of Gustavus W. Pach, who would go on to build the world-renowned Pach Brothers photography dynasty in New York.
