This style was issued to naval cadets before the later standardization of naval dirk patterns. It differs noticeably from the later and much more common officer dirks of the wartime period.
Distinctive features include the reinforced metal backstrap on the grip, separate suspension-ring bands on the scabbard, high-quality rayskin grip, and finely finished fittings.
The grip is covered in white rayskin and fitted with a cherry blossom menuki-style pin.
The scabbard also appears to use high-quality polished rayskin finish with metal mounts.

Condition:
The blade shows age-related rust, oxidation, and surface staining.
Verdigris is present on the habaki area.
Some plating loss is visible on the butt/pommel section.
The scabbard and fittings show age-related wear and tarnish, but the overall construction remains solid.
The blade could not be removed from the hilt, so the tang has not been inspected.
