Thomas H. Witherby began producing highly regarded edge tools (chisels, drawknives) in 1827.The Millbury Era: Production was based in Millbury, MA. Following financial shifts, it became the T.H. Witherby Tool Co. in 1859.Civil War Contract: In 1862, the company held contracts to manufacture 25,000 bayonets and ramrods for the Union Army.Transition to Winsted: In 1868–1869, the business was sold to the Winsted Hoe Company (later Winsted Edge Tool Works) in Winsted, CT.Quality Reputation: Witherby tools are characterized by fine steel tempering, largely attributed to their early quality standards and later maintained by Winsted foreman George Jessup.End of Production: The Winsted Edge Tool Works continued producing Witherby branded tools well into the 20th century, with catalogs existing up to 1950.
