The original Dixie Clipper (civil registration NC18605) was an American Boeing 314 Clipper flying boat, best known for being the world\'s first transatlantic commercial flight to carry paying passengers between America and Europe onJune 28th, 1939. The22 paying passengers on this inaugural flight enjoyed luxury amenities like a 14-seat dining room, sleeping berths, seats that converted into comfortable bunks, private suites, men and women\'s dressing rooms, and a large comfortable social lounge.
There was a flight deck, a chartroom, and a radio operator\'s cabin. There were bunks for off-duty crew to rest on the nonstop oceanic crossings that lasted 24 hours or longer.
Only 12 Boeing 314 Clipper aircraft were built between 1938 and 1941. The wings were immensely thick and had a wingspan of 152 feet with an internal catwalk which allowed crew members to service the four engines mid-flight. The top of the plane featured the celestial observation turret, from which the flying boat’s position was checked against the sun, moon, and stars. It had a range of 3,500 miles, which was enough to cross either the Atlantic or Pacific.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Pan Am\'s Clipper fleet was contracted and requisitioned by the U.S. government to support the war effort. The planes carried generals, admirals, diplomats, intelligence agents, and war correspondents.
In January 1943, the Dixie Clipper famously flew President Franklin D. Roosevelt part of the way to his historic wartime strategy meeting with Winston Churchill for the Casablanca Conference in Morocco, marking the first time a sitting U.S. president flew on an airplane in office.
