Original antique carte de visite (CDV) photograph identified on the reverse as “Rev Kellog” of Muskegon, Michigan.
This striking portrait features a bearded clergyman seated in a studio setting, photographed by J.D. Westervelt of Westervelt Photographic Parlors, Muskegon, Mich. The detailed studio backmark includes the notation “Negatives Preserved,” a hallmark of 19th-century professional photography studios.
The photograph dates to approximately the 1870s, based on format, mount style, and photographic process (albumen print). The subject’s attire and presentation are consistent with period portraits of religious figures and community leaders.
Muskegon experienced significant growth during the late 19th century, and identified portraits from local studios such as Westervelt are increasingly desirable for collectors of Michigan history, religious Americana, and early photographic portraiture.
The reverse inscription identifying the sitter as “Rev Kellog” adds historical interest and potential research value, making this a strong example of a named 19th-century portrait.
