Outstanding early cast-iron artillery round reportedly recovered fromLake Champlain.
The ball measures approximately3.5 inches in diameterand is identified as 6-pounder-size solid round shot. Six-pounder artillery was extensively used during the Revolutionary War, including aboard vessels fighting on Lake Champlain.
The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum has documented numerous 6-pound cast-iron round shots recovered during archaeological work at Valcour Bay, site of theOctober 11, 1776 Battle of Valcour Island.
This example exhibits extensive oxidation, pitting and casting irregularities consistent with prolonged exposure and recovery. A small casting void/hole is visible on the surface. Similar casting voids are documented on archaeological 6-pound round shot recovered from Valcour Bay.
