Sumptuous portfolio publication compiling the 81 contact sheets Robert Frank used in the production of The Americans. The 81 original-size, unbound four-color plates measure approximately 20-1/4 x 16-5/8 inches and are wrapped in the original 3-1/8-inch gray paper obi/band and handmade Japanese paper. The plates are housed in a silver paper-covered trifold folio, with Frank’s initials and the title debossed on the exterior and colophon information printed on the interior. The edition number is handwritten in ink on the silver folio beneath the contact sheet reproductions.
The folio and plates are housed in a padded, custom-made paulownia wood box, with Frank’s facsimile signature debossed on the lid. The wood box and a 24-page pamphlet, containing notes on the photographs in Japanese and English by Robert Frank, interviewed by Shino Kuraishi, are housed in the original sturdy black cardboard box with the edition number printed on a label affixed to the edge. Complete with the publisher’s original shipping carton.
