Real photo postcard of the coal mining town of Russellton, with rows of nearly identical two-story frame company double houses climbing the hillside, many with front porches and smoke rising from their chimneys. Bare trees mark the late winter or early spring season. Below the houses, two long low outbuildings sit at the edge of a wide open field, where a lone figure walks across the grass. In the foreground a rutted dirt road curves down toward a wooden footbridge over a creek, where another person leans on the rail. A larger house stands on the hill at upper right. Russellton grew up around the Russellton No. 1 mine, opened around 1904 by the Bessemer Coal and Coke Company and later a captive mine of Republic Steel. Postmarked Harmarville, Pa., April 22, 1909, with a Russellton, Pa. receiving mark dated April 23, on a 1-cent green Franklin stamp. The sender dated the message April 22, 1909, and begins it \"This is the town where...\" A great piece for collectors of Russellton and Allegheny County topographical postcards, Pennsylvania coal patch towns, or mining history.
