The box is signed by the Artist & Titled in Cyrillic in gold at the lower edge of the round cover. The cover is professionally hand painted with high details and extremely intricate traditional gold decoration all around the picture and around the wall of the box.
Lacquer boxes like this one are part of a traditional Russian folk art that are crafted in distinct villages in Russia. There are four main schools known for the craft of lacquer boxes: Palekh, Fedoskino, Mstera and Kholui (or Kholuy).The boxes are traditionally made of papier-mâché through a long process, then hand painted using egg tempera.
