We\'re not sure if these 2.75\" x 4.25\" advertising trade cards showing republicans Rutherford Hayes and William Wheeler are from the 1876 presidential campaign, or done after that election fiasco and their inauguration. We weren\'t around then so can\'t say for sure.
But we think the former because, if done after, they likely would have respected the office enough to note them as \"president\" and \"vice-president\" when they printed them. We also know that any of their items are pretty scarce and highly sought after among political collectors.
We made sure that a pair of these were received by the R.B. Hayes Presidential Museum and Libraries when we moved from Ohio because they did not even have them in their vast collection. Additionally, these are just about the earliest Bufford trade cards we\'ve seen. There are examples having that company\'s printing with presidential candidates from 1880 and beyond, but around 1876 is the earliest we\'ve seen.
So, we have to ask: How much Hayes and Wheeler material do you have in your collection?
