SIGNED Douglas MacArthur 1947 Letter & Portrait Set to AAU Official Daniel J. Ferris For sale is a magnificent and historically important two-piece set, featuring a letter hand-signed by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and a matching companion portrait. This set was sent by General MacArthur from his headquarters in occupied Japan to Mr. Daniel J. Ferris, the powerful head of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). It comes from the personal collection of another major U.S. Olympic official (1912-1972), providing an impeccable history. The Hand-Signed Letter This is an extraordinary piece of correspondence that connects post-WWII policy with the international sports world. - Authentic Signature: The letter is personally hand-signed in ink by \"Douglas MacArthur\". The signature is an excellent, clean example.
- Historic Content: Dated November 20, 1947, on official \"GENERAL HEADQUARTERS SUPREME COMMANDER FOR THE ALLIED POWERS\" letterhead, MacArthur discusses the critical issue of Japan\'s re-entry into global society. He writes in support of the \"Olympic idea of participation by the Japanese in international athletics\" and notes that \"The Japanese could present an excellent competitive team in swimming.\"
- Recipient: The letter is addressed to Daniel J. Ferris, the Secretary-Treasurer of the AAU, showing MacArthur was corresponding with the highest levels of the U.S. sporting world to advance his goals for Japan.
The Companion Portrait This is a handsome companion piece, presented in a matching frame. - Details: The item is a high-quality print of a sketch of General MacArthur in his U.S. Army uniform. In the background is a map of the Philippines, a location central to his career.
- Inscription: A decorative scroll on the print reads, \"General Douglas MacArthur, Soldier, Leader, Beloved by His Men, An Inspiration to all.\"
- Please Note: The signature on the portrait is a facsimile (part of the print itself) and is not hand-signed. The hand-signed signature is on the letter.
Condition & Presentation - Both the letter and the portrait are housed in matching vintage wooden frames with a gold-tone bezel. They are in excellent condition for their age.
- The letter paper shows light, even toning. The signature is bold and clear.
- Please review all photos carefully as they are a key part of the description.
This is a rare opportunity to own an authentic, signed piece of correspondence from one of the 20th century\'s most significant military figures, with fascinating content linking him directly to the Olympic movement.
