A TRIBUTE TO ‘JOHNNIE’ JOHNSON, THE HIGHEST SCORING RAF ACE OF WORLD WAR II
ST CROIX-SUR-MER
By Robert Taylor
Little over a mile inland from the junction of Gold and Juno beaches, the village of Sainte-Croix-sur-Mer was liberated by the Canadians on D-Day. Within hours, Sappers and Pioneers using bulldozers and graders had started leveling the site and, still under enemy fire, begun to unravel the tons of wire mesh to complete the first temporary airstrip in Normandy. On the morning of 10 June 1944, just four days after D-Day, the Mk IX Spitfires of 144 Canadian Wing arrived.Perhaps the greatest pilot to ever fly the Spitfire was the RAF’s top fighter Ace ‘Johnnie’ Johnson. His resolute determination and steadfast leadership came into its own during D-Day and the subsequent advance through Normandy, and he would finish the war as the highest scoring Allied Ace in Europe.
This outstanding edition was released in 1990 and is now highly sought after on the secondary market.
