SUPERFINE STRONG ANTIQUE FLAT BUTTON

Raised Letter Backmark • Complete Loop Shank • Early Federal Relic

c. 1790–1830 One-Piece Copper / Brass

THE FAITHFUL AVIATORS — Treasure Hunter Store

Original one-piece FLAT BUTTON with a crisp raised SUPERFINE STRONG quality backmark around the shank. Double dotted / beaded rings. Face is plain pebbled copper with honest relic texture. Reverse retains the original CAST LOOP SHANK — intact and open. No polish. No grind. As-found surfaces.

WHAT YOU GET

• 1 original SUPERFINE STRONG flat button

• 1 Revolutionary War themed display case (Washington Crossing the Delaware insert) as photographed

• Button shown face-up in the case and in-hand with tweezers

BACKMARK — THIS IS THE lettering. Quality trademark, not a maker’s personal name.

British and early American button makers stamped quality grades on one-piece gilt and brass flats from the 1790s into the 1830s:

• Fine

• Extra

• Superior

• Superfine

• Strong

• Double Gilt / Treble Gilt / Extra Rich

SUPERFINE STRONG sits at the top of that marketing scale. Related marks include SUPERFINE STRONG LONDON. Tice / McGuinn-Bazelon / detectorist references place raised-letter quality flats about 1790–1835, with most American-dug examples clustering 1800–1830. Incuse (sunken) letters run later. This example is RAISED.

PERIOD USE

Worn on civilian coats, waistcoats, and overcoats in the Early Republic, Jefferson / Madison years, and War of 1812 generation. One-piece flats were the standard metal dress button before cheap hollow two-piece pictorials took over in the mid-1830s. Recovered by relic hunters on farmsteads, tavern sites, early roads, and War of 1812–era ground. The case is modern display — the button is the antique.

CONSTRUCTION

• Type: one-piece flat button

• Face: plain / pebbled copper

• Reverse: SUPERFINE STRONG + beaded rings

• Fastener: original loop shank, complete

• Metal: copper alloy / brass tone

CONDITION

Relic patina. Letters readable. Shank present and functional. Face shows even granular wear consistent with age and soil. Not cleaned beyond dry handling for photos. Case has light handling wear.
