This is a remarkable personal archive from Samuel C.G. Watkins of Montclair, author of Reminiscences of Montclair, and longtime dentist, civic leader, and collector. The lot includes hundreds of pieces of correspondence, scrapbooks, clippings, photographs, and handwritten notes documenting Watkins’s personal, professional, and social life. Mostly from the early 1900s.
Includes a scrapbook titled “Personal Scrapbook No. 4” containing letters related to the book. The scrapbook lists names in alphabetical order with descriptions of each person or company and a corresponding number. Each of the three 3-ring binder folders is numbered, and the scrapbook serves as a guide to the letters. I did not match each number to each letter but searched through a lot of them and matched up.
The letters include thank you notes and other correspondence related to his book, as well as write-ups by Samuel C.G. Watkins about his family, including his wives, children, daughter, and granddaughter. Many smaller handwritten letters are from his daughter and granddaughter.
Also included are photos of his daughter’s house, newspaper clippings, and additional pictures. Some letters are from notable individuals and companies. Many handwritten letters also include typed transcriptions, and envelopes with stamps are attached to each folder.
This is a rare and historically significant archive with hundreds of pieces. Please review the photos carefully for the best description. Comes as seen in the pictures.
