Checked by hand by a craftsman with 45 years at the bench. The head has been re-tightened on the handle. Japanese hakoya tsuchi - a box maker's claw hammer with a milled 25 x 25mm face, 305mm overall, red oak handle. Ships from Japan with tracking.
THE MILLED FACE
The striking face is cut with a grid of fine grooves - photo 2. The grooves bite the nail head instead of skidding off it, which is what you want when you are driving nails all day. A plain face on an old hammer is often worn smooth; this one is not.
THE NAME
The handle carries a paper label reading サンモク - Sanmoku - with a line about the head being fixed with a strong adhesive. Photo 1 shows the label on the handle. I could not find this maker in any record I have access to, so I can tell you the name but nothing about the workshop behind it.
THE WORK I DID
I am a retired furniture maker. For 45 years I worked by hand here in Japan. I have tightened the head on the handle before selling it. A brass wedge sits in the eye - photo 3.
CONDITION
Head: dark with age. The milled face is sharp and unworn.
Claw: split claw for pulling nails, both tines intact - photos 4 and 5.
Handle: Japanese red oak, with the original label still on it.
Head on handle: re-tightened, brass wedge in the eye.
I photograph flaws rather than hide them. Please examine all photos for exact condition.
